special needs workshops are tailored to individual needs

Special needs work

At ncounter we believe that all young people deserve the opportunity to develop to their fullest potential. We offer tailor-made workshops to schools for young people with special educational needs, or those who are vulnerable or 'at risk'. Our Youth work Manager will meet with the school Special Needs Co-ordinator to discuss how we can provide a programme of performing and creative arts which is best suited to the needs of all pupils. We work with small groups of up to 15 over one-three days at our professionally equipped dance studio/youth cafe "The Base" at Purton Stoke and offer minibus transport to and from an agreed point. All our workshops are staffed by at least 3 trained staff with experience of special needs. Over the last two years we have worked with special needs groups from: Hardenhuish, Chippenham; Sheldon, Chippenham; Greendown, Swindon; Riverside PRU, Swindon; Crowdy's Hill, Swindon. In each case SENCO's have reported increased confidence, self-esteem and development of social skills in the young people. All the young people who attend workshops (special needs and mainstream) have the opportunity to perform at our summer festival, "The Mix". We are also developing our programme of workshops this year to include mixed sessions for special needs and mainstream pupils.
