Research shows that many young people today have little meaningful contact with adults on a daily basis - at school, teachers are increasingly focussed solely on teaching curriculum subjects; parents are often out at work when young people come home and there is little contact in the evening or weekend if young people themselves have jobs. Researchers believe that this factor is partly responsible for the increase in juvenile crime and anti-social behaviour as well as a general poor level of social and life skills amongst many young people. Youth workers therefore play a hugely important role in the lives of young people, offering them opportunities to share problems and life-changes as well as celebrate successes. Recreation and learning new skills in an informal environment is of great value to young people, especially in an age where we put so much emphasis on academic learning and testing. Anti-social behaviour can also be challenged and discussed in such an informal environment and young peoples' lives changed as youthworkers get alongside them instead of confront them. Through our weekly programme of school lunch clubs, After school youth cafes, evening youth club and weekend performing arts workshops we are seeing young peoples' aspirations, hopes and behaviour change positively, opening up for them new choices and horizons to aim for.
