We get on pretty well, say West Swindon locals
The idea that young people and the elderly don't get on is wrong, according to a report published today by local charity ncounter. In fact, over half the people asked said that relationships between young people and the elderly are good in West Swindon.

The survey also found that two out of three people of all ages think a community cafe would improve the local area, and over half want to see an after school club. One in three want to see a drop-in for elderly people as well.
70 people were canvassed by young people in the Shaw shopping centre earlier this month, to get a "snapshot" of local community needs and see how relations between different generations are working out.
- 56% of those asked said that young people and the elderly get on well in the area, with only 16% considering there are a lot of problems.
- To improve relations between generations, 33% said more community events and places to meet were needed. Understanding and respect were also considered important by 24% of those who were asked, and 14% said communication was important.
- A community cafe was the most popular idea for improving the local area, with 64% of those asked saying this was their choice. 51% said a schools out (after school) club would be of benefit, with 41% saying a drop-in centre for the elderly would improve the local area.
The survey was carried out by ncounter, a local arts and education charity with a Christian foundation, in collaboration with local churches. It was funded by the Community Foundation. The results will be used in drawing up plans to improve local community facilities.
