Young people give West Swindon the thumbs up!
The idea that young people don’t like living in Swindon is wrong, according to a survey of young people published by ncounter under the West Swindon emerge project. In fact, at least as far as West Swindon’s concerned, most young people who live there, like it.

The survey also found that over half of young people play sport in their leisure time, and three quarters rate local sports facilities as “good” or “great”. But most feel that more can be done – cheaper access to sports facilities and new arts facilities are the most popular improvements which could be made in the local area.
Over 450 students at Bradon Forest school in Purton, which has a large intake from West Swindon, and Greendown school in West Swindon, took part in the survey, which also canvassed opinions from local youth groups.
- Although 84% of young people living in West Swindon rate it as “not bad”, “good” or “great”, 16% say that the level of personal safety in West Swindon is “terrible”.
- Leisure time is most often spent with friends (59% of responses), with 55% watching TV and playing video games. 53% play sport outside school, 35% play music and 29% say shopping is a leisure activity for them.
- 71% of young people like listening to music, with 42% into dance and 39% drama. 17% said they would like to learn new skills in dance, compared with 13% for music and 12% for drama. Of those wanting better arts facilities, 36% said they wanted a performance café, 29% a recording studio and 24% a rehearsal facility. Only 14% said they wanted more clubs.
The survey was carried out by ncounter, a local arts and education charity with a Christian foundation, in collaboration with local churches. It was funded by the Community Foundation.
